My kindergartener was reading, really reading, by December. The parent involvement is amazing. The administration is responsive to needs of parents and students. The teachers are dedicated beyond belief by spending their own time and money teaching our children. At our other school, we were so unhappy that it was a constant battle just to make them go to school. Now they love it so much they have perfect attendance. There are always flyers being sent home about some extra-curriculum activity or another plus various field trips/school events. Not only am I involved but I want to be involved. I have no shortage of suggestions of activities for my kids. Plus due to the hard work and attention of the teachers, my kids grades and scores are high. But now she has been attending rosemont for more than 2 years and she was able to pass her reading task test. She also has adhd and all of rosemonts staff has helped me with my daughters behavior problem including the principal she is a great principal. We are finishing our first year at Rosemont and I have yet to see anything worth staying for. There is no communication between the staff and parents, there are no extracurricular activities (I'd like to know what the 2/11/08 review is involved in?) and the curriculum is more appropriate for my 3 year old. We are truly considering moving unless something drastic changes. Please share your positive stories. Many of the classroom teachers are good, but they have no leadership, so the education ends up haphazard- maybe you get it, and maybe you don't. If you have a choice, go elsewhere. The campus is split in two. The principal of the lower school, Claudia M, puts her own political agenda over the kids education. The school has many special programs with high paid teachers who don't teach. There is absolutely no structure or consistency due to lack of leadership. We were happy to hear we will get a new principal this year on the lower campus, but the upper campus will still suffer from the low teacher morale and complete lack of a discipline policy. Just because we are an inner city public school, I refuse to accept mediocrity and the prevailing attitude at the school of 'it could be worse.' The apathy is as troubling as the poor leadership. I have had a great experience there and so have my children. This school still feels like the old neighborhood schools of the 50's. There is alot of parent involvement and I really like that. The construction and the scheduled completion date were extremely difficult to achieve but the entire staff at Rosemont treated my team like family and rolled out the red carpet in assisting us during the construction phase. I particularly noticed the attention the Rosemont staff paid in instilling good behavior and manners in the children. With the large number of children at Rosemont the classrooms were always under control, there was no graffiti on walls, and the children were terrific when going to recess, lunch or different classes. The greatest thing that I observed was a level of caring and love for the students with special needs from the staff as well as the other students. We have been amazed at all of the opportunities this school offers its students. The teachers we ve worked with have been top-notch and the principal, Anna Brining, is an outstanding leader with extraordinary vision. She is supportive, hands-on and knowledgeable. She knows most kids by name and always takes the time to discuss whatever is important. I have never been to the school without seeing her in action doing whatever she can to improve the school even more. The level of parent involvement is also impressive. It's so good to see someone speaking out about this principal. She talks about learning, but pushes faculty to teach the state test. Weak leadership has meant no underlying vision of why we educate or what should be taught. There is no unifying theme to connect various subject matters. No historic sense to connect past, present and future-- Just an endless stream of the next curriculum that will fix everything and high-profile but 'empty' special programs, arts, dance, etc. And, of course, 'we're the best' speeches. In reality, bright students are not properly challenged, and challenged students do not develop fundamental skills. It's a sad state for an old school with strong tradition. My kids have moved on. The parents are very clique-ish and this attitude carries over to the faculty and student body. The principal has her hands full with all the PTA politics and actually handles it quite well. Unfortuately, prejudices abound here, and I am not talking about racial tension, it is more an obsession with the 'cool-factor'. I love Rosemont and couldn't have hoped for a better public school experience. While annoyed by PTA politics and sometimes feeling excluded due to my career choices (10 hour days limit my availability to volunteer), I have been nothing but pleased with the teachers and the attention my child has received. The extracurricular activities and the level of academic expectation are outstanding. My husband has not been happy with the amount of homework, which he feels is too much for the age group, but I feel it is good preparation for future requirements.
